getting here * * * It takes about 45 minutes from Inverness to Ullapool, and another 45 minutes from Ullapool to Altandhu. Taking the A835 north out of Ullapool, after 10 miles the turn off for Achiltibuie and the Summer Isles is well marked. Keep driving along the single track road for about half an hour, past Stac Pollaidh car park and past the turn off to Lochinver, until you reach a fork in the road. Take the right turn, marked for Altan Dubh (not left towards Achiltibuie). Five minutes after Achnahaird you will reach the crest of a hill, and from there you will see the Summer Isles, Altandhu, and the chalets by the seashore. The Macleod house is beside the second group of (4 berth) chalets.

Multimap have kindly produced a map of the area. You can use the "zoom in" and the "zoom out" on the left of the Multimap screen to plan your journey.

You will be travelling through beautiful but remote countryside. Mobile phone coverage is variable. Leave plenty of time, and check where you can get petrol, especially if travelling at night or on a Sunday.

Take your time on the single-track road if it is new to you; its good to do this drive during daylight hours if at all possible, not least for the spectacular views. You will probably see stags on the road in the evening and at night so keep an eye out.

*  Swam in the sea and got very tired,
climbed stac pollaidh and almost expired,
walked on the rocks and looked in rockpools,
sat in the sun and fell off our stools,
this is the place we long to be,
we leave our hearts here beside the sea.
